Central Dock Seawall Project, St. Joseph/Benton Harbor, MI

This commercial dock located at the intersection of the St. Joseph River and Paw Paw rivers is highly used by shipping barges carrying sand, salt and cement.

Wightman & Associates, Inc designed the sheet pile seawall extension along the Paw Paw River side of the dock to replace the failing timber seawall.  The project began were the earlier replacement of the St. Joseph River side of the dock had been stopped.  Wightman’s scope of work also included preparing the MDEQ and Army Corp of Engineers Permit applications; bid documents and contract documents.

Due to unexpected circumstances the owners decided to construct less than the original planned amount of seawall at this time so a “as constructed” survey & drawing was completed to document exactly what was installed.

Seawall Study and Repair Projects, New Buffalo, MI
New Buffalo
Rain caused massive runoff and damaged the City’s Transit Marina seawall.

An engineering study was completed following a record rainfall (10-12 inches) in mid September 2008. Two large sinkholes developed on the upstream end of the marina required an engineering study.  The study concluded that scour during the high velocity flows had undercut the seawalls in several areas and hydraulic pressure build up behind the seawall caused the soil to flow under the wall in the two sink hole areas.  Proposed solutions were a new deeper seawall in front of the existing wall and added surface drainage.

Incline Elevators

The state of Michigan has begun to strictly enforce the design requirements for incline elevators frequently used on high bluffs to reach beach areas.  In the past, there were problems with incline elevators being approved based on prototype elevator equipment plans and no documentation.

WAI prepares construction documents for inclined elevators including a geotechnical report. Boundary and topographic surveys are used to design the elevator foundation. Equipment plans are integrated with site plan to provide specific lot information such as landing decks. Plans now have to be submitted to the state Plan Review Division and the /elevator Division.
