Lakes Area Sewer Authority Wastewater Collection and Treatment System Project
Fish, Finch and West Saddlebag Lakes, Marcellus and Volinia Townships, Cass County
Gravel Lake, Porter Township, Van Buren County MI

The wastewater treatment plant serve 730 customers around 4 lakes and the 230 Village of
Marcellus customers. |
- The Lakes Area Sewer Authority, through the Cass County Board of Public Works, obtained USDA funding and is constructing a $10.833 million wastewater collection and treatment system project to construct sanitary sewers.
- The collection system is a gravity system with lift stations while the treatment plant is a 250,000 gpd activated sludge process, expandable to 1.0 mgd. The base basin designs will permit the receipt of septage, requiring installation of only a septage receiving station and associated headworks/piping/etc which are also being engineered and constructed as part of the project due to remaining contingency funds.
This project received a 2011 Southwest Michigan Planning Commission Graham Woodhouse Intergovernmental Effort Award and the ASCE Quality of Life Award for the Southwest MI Group.

Barron Lake Cass County, MI

The lake is restored, aiding the health of
fisheries and wildlife habitat, including an
adjoining wetland. It will also help maintain
property values. |
- Barron Lake was shrinking due to water evaporation. An Engineering
Report for the Establishment and Maintenance of a Legal Lake Level
recommended the legal level of 757.00 feet and methods of achieving
and maintaining that level.
- A pump system raised the lake level 3 ft 4 in. to the legal level with
1,050 gallons of water per minute from the 226-foot-deep well.
- Without and outlet, the lake was brought up to 756.50 feet, leaving a
six-inch free board for periods of high stormwater runoff. When the
legal level is reached, the pump will be turned off while lake level
monitoring continues.
- To protect against flooding, a gravity system was installed.

Industrial Park Treatment Train
Dowagiac, MI

The treatment train consists of three cells: a sediment cell, an infiltration cell and 3.5 acres of newly created wetland. |
- The city wanted to extend its roadway, water main, sanitary sewer and storm sewer to its growing industrial park. The work included 8,500 linear feet of curbed bituminous roadway, 9,600 linear feet of 12-inch water main, 8,000 linear feet of sanitary sewer, and 7,000 linear feet of storm sewer varying in size between 12 and 30 inches.
- The treatment train has been heralded by MDEQ and is being shown as a prudent manner of treating storm water before it enters a trout stream. The wetlands have a waterfowl island, wet pond and a micro-pool.

Juno, Painter Christiana Lakes Wastewater Collection System Ontwa and Mason Townships, Cass County, MI

Gravity sewers for the southern end of
Christiana and Juno Lakes within Ontwa
Township and for the southern and eastern
ends of Juno Lake within Mason
Township. |
- The wastewater from this area is pumped through a six-inch force
main to connect to an existing 10-inch sewer on the south side of
Eagle Lake that was constructed as part of the previous Ontwa Township
sewer system.
- The project provided 271 connections involving 20,420 linear feet of
eight- and 10-inch sanitary sewer, 7,980 linear feet of two, four, and
six-inch force main, and three lift stations.

Crooked Lake Augementation,Van Buren County, MI
Drought conditions had caused the lake water level in Big and Little Crooked Lakes to drop significantly over a period of years from the established legal lake elevation of 766.00. |
- The existing 12” irrigation well located on the east side of Big Crooked Lake was used to add water to both lakes. This augmentation well raised and maintains the lake levels at 765.5 feet.
- An 8” forcemain was constructed from the well to connect to an 18” gravity outlet pipe located on east side of Big Crooked Lake. The gravity pipe pumps water approximately 112,752.,000 to 150,336,000 gallons of water annually during the summer months.
- The concrete end section is protected with a heavy riprap over geotextile fabric and North American Green C350 permanent turf reinforcement mat.
